A 46-year-old man in a drunken stupor slit the throat of his teenaged son when the latter tried to save his mother from his onslaught at Jaggi Colony, here on Wednesday night. Neighbours said Navjot Singh, 17, who was a Class 12 student, was studying in the adjoining room, and rushed to his parents’ room on hearing his mother Kulvinder Kaur scream.

His sister Simranjit Kaur told the police as Navjot stepped between his mother and father Zorawar Singh, she told him to summon the neighbours that enraged her father more, and he slit her brother’s neck after pushing him against the wall.

She said her father fled the scene during the melee when her brother was being taken to the civil hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Kulvinder’s brother Virender Singh alleged that Zorawar suspected his sister of infidelity and often beat her up under the influence of liquor. Besides, Zorawar’s mother also used to incite him against his wife, causing marital discord.

Sub-inspector Dharamvir at Baldev Nagar police post said the accused had been booked for murder, and police teams were working to trace him. The accused has previously served five years in jail after being convicted of possessing drugs. Meanwhile, Virender said they will not cremate the body till the accused was arrested.
