President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the nation on Monday on the eve of India’s 71st Independence Day.

Calling for creating a New India by 2022, the President said the country must be compassionate and egalitarian society that does not discriminate on gender or religious background.

He hailed the government’s demonetisation decision and the people’s “wholehearted” support in the battle against corruption and black money, voluntarily giving up LPG fuel subsidy and the roll out of Goods and Services Tax.

7:14pm: New India must include that integral humanist component that is in our DNA

7:13pm: I am glad that the citizens of this country have accepted GST with pleasure

7:12pm: Govt can make laws but it is our responsibility to become a law abiding citizen

7:10pm: Govt has started Swachch Bharat campaign but it is the duty of each one of us to keep the nation clean

7:09pm:It is time that we must take inspiration from those who gave their lives for the nation and move forward.

7:07pm: We need to believe in peace and unity.

7:05pm: The principles that Gandhi ji spoke about are relevant even today

7:04pm: From the earliest days of our freedom struggle, we were blessed with a galaxy of revolutionary leaders who guided our country

7:03pm: We are indebted to thousands of freedom fighters for our independence.
