In the third killing of a civilian in past nine days, a woman was shot dead by unknown gunmen, suspected to be militants, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Friday, police officials said.

A grenade was also lobbed at the office of district police officer (DPO) Awantipora in Pulwama, injuring four persons.

Shameema, 47, was fired upon near the home of her parents at Drabgham village of Pulwama in the afternoon and “died on the spot”, said an official of the Rajpora police station.

The official said that their preliminary investigation suggests that it was the work of militants. “We are investigating the cause of the attack,” he said.

Kashmir police, in a tweet, blamed the Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit. “Proscribed terror outfit HM behind the killing of a lady at Darbgham #Pulwama,” it said.

There was also a grenade attack on the main crossroads in Awantipora, leaving four persons injured, including one critically.

An official at the control room Awantipora said that militants lobbed a grenade towards the main gate of DPO Awantipora’s office which missed the target but burst on the road injuring the four civilians, including Abdul Ahad Pinchoo,in his 50s, who received critical injuries in his head.

“Pinchoo and another man have been hospitalized while two other wounded have been discharged,” he said.

So far three civilians have been killed in the past 10 days in south Kashmir.

The bullet-riddled body of a youth was recovered on Monday morning, hours after he was abducted by gunmen from his home in Pulwama. Police had said that militants abducted 26-year-old Gulzar Ahmad Bhat after barging into his house at Murran in the district on Sunday night.
