Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday wished ailing Dravidar Munntera Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi a quick recovery, and offered to assist him in any way possible.
The 94-year-old politician is being treated for urinary tract infection at his residence by a medical team from the Kauvery Hospital.
“Spoke to Thiru @mkstalin and Kanimozhi Ji. Enquired about the health of Kalaignar Karunanidhiji and offered any assistance required. I pray for his quick recovery and good health. @kalaignar89,” he tweeted.
Hospital authorities had issued a bulletin reporting a “slight decline” in Karunanidhi’s health due to “age-related ailments” on Thursday night. Security was beefed up at the DMK leader’s Gopalapuram residence the following morning even as hundreds of party members arrived to offer their respects. Dignitaries from other political parties who dropped by included Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief Vaiko, state BJP head Tamilisai Soundararajan and Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan.
Visitors were not being allowed to meet the ailing leader.
“Having such a fever after a tracheostomy procedure is usual. Stalin (Karunanidhi’s son and DMK working president) told me that he is fine. I am confident that he will bounce back with the same magnetic voice,” Vaiko told reporters after the visit.
Karunanidhi , who has been ailing since October 2016, underwent a procedure to change his tracheostomy tube to help with his breathing a few days ago.
Stalin has thanked the Prime Minister, President, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and other leaders for their wishes. “I am extremely grateful for their offers of help. Thalaivar is getting the best medical care and treatment. We hope he will recover soon,” he tweeted.
