Family gives Tricolour tribute to Kasganj victim

In what they called a befitting tribute, the family members of Chandan Gupta, the youth killed in communal clashes on Republic Day in Kasganj, hoisted a tricolour on their rooftop on Wednesday.

In what they called a befitting tribute, the family members of Chandan Gupta, the youth killed in communal clashes on Republic Day in Kasganj, hoisted a tricolour on their rooftop on Wednesday.

The occasion was the terhavi (ritual performed on the thirteenth day of cremation.)

The tricolour was unfurled by Chandan’s father Sushil Gupta atop a 50 feet tall metallic pole.

“Today is Chandan’s terhavi. We have dedicated this flag to him. It will serve as a constant reminder of the sacrifice he made to hoist this flag,” said a close relative of the family.

The family has also demanded construction of Chandan Chowk in his memory. Local BJP leaders have assured to look into the demand.

The state government has provided a compensation of Rs 20 Lakh to the family.

Meanwhile, police on Wednesday arrested two more accused named in the FIR for Chandan’s murder.

“The accused has been identified as Waseem and Naseem Javed, brothers of the main accused Saleem,” said superintendent of police, Kasganj, Piyush Srivastav.

Saleem has already been arrested and is in judicial custody.

“The accused were arrested by one of our raiding parties from Kasganj while following an intelligence input,” said the SP. Investigators have also recovered a country made pistol and two cartridges each from both the accused.

The brothers use to live near Kotwali Police station in Kasganj are garment traders.

They were named in the FIR on the complaint of Chandan’s father Sushil Gupta on January 27, a day after the clashes.

So far, the police have arrested a total of nine people.

According to investigators, two arms licenses were issued in the name of Saleem Javed which were cancelled post his arrest.

Kasganj police is sending all the weapons recovered from the accused. “The forensic investigation will help us to point out the specific weapon used in the murder of Chandan,” said the SP.

Apart from Chandan’s murder, police have registered a total of eight FIR regarding the communal violence and its aftermath.

Over a 100 people have been arrested.

Meanwhile, the situation in Kasganj remained peaceful on Wednesday.
