Nearly seven years after journalist Jyotirmoy Dey was gunned down in suburban Mumbai, a Special CBI court in Mumbai will pronounce its verdict on Wednesday.

Dey, 56, was the Editor (Investigations) of Midday eveninger, and was shot dead on June 11, 2011, near his Powai residence.

According to the prosecution, gangster Chhota Rajan’s men — Satish Kaliya, Anil Waghmode, Abhijeet Shinde, Nilesh Shendge, Arun Dhake, Mangesh Agawane and Sachin Gaikwad — followed Dey, and Kaliya shot him with a .32 bore pistol near Powai garden, and fled.

The prosecution said Dey was shot on the orders of Rajan, allegedly instigated by another journalist, Jigna Vora, who worked with a different newspaper at the time. Special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat has claimed that Rajan got Dey killed because of the articles he published in a city tabloid. The crime branch said these articles had the potential to undermine Rajan’s illegal activities.

Here are the highlights:

12.28pm: Journalist Jigna Vora’s family members say they are relieved that she has been acquitted. “She will not get back in this field now,” they said. Her mother has passed away, as have her grandparents.

12.20pm: Former Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik , who was the commissioner at the time of the murder, said: “I feel relieved. This is the first time that an underworld don has been convicted in a regular [murder] case.” Speaking of the acquittals, he said: “Whether the acquittals [of Jigna and Paulson] were on technical grounds or based on facts will be known only after obtaining a copy of the order. Anyway, I am sure the CBI will appeal against it in the higher court.”
