Mumbai Police arrest 725 for drink driving in special drive on Holi
During the Mumbai Police 16-hour special drive on Holi, 725 people were arrested for drink driving, and their vehicles were seized.Updated: Mar 22, 2019 11:01 IST
As a part of its special drive for Holi, the Mumbai police, in collaboration with the traffic department, recorded at least 10,675 cases of traffic violations on Thursday.
During the 16-hour drive, 725 people were arrested for drink driving, and their vehicles were seized. The police caught 789 bikers who had two pillion riders and 166 for rash driving. While 430 people were caught for speeding, 4,738 were held for riding without helmets and 3,827 other offences were registered.
“The patrolling started from midnight and we intensified our take action against those riding two-wheelers without a helmet, those riding triple seat and drink driving,” said Amitesh Kumar, joint commissioner of police, traffic.
Last year, 11,018 cases of traffic violations were recorded during the 12-hour drive. While 743 people were arrested for drink driving, 4,417 were held for riding without a helmet, 2,403 for speeding, 186 for riding triple seat and 25 for rash driving. The police had also penalised 348 people for illegal parking and 2,896 for other offences.
In 2017, total 4,621 cases of road traffic violations were reported during the special drive on Holi. The police had nabbed 1,980 bikers for riding without a helmet, 436 bikers for riding triple seat and 317 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. The city traffic police department registered 34 cases of rash driving and 1,854 other offences, including signal jumping, speeding, stopping on the pedestrian crossing, were registered.
