The police on Wednesday released sketches of two suspects who killed Shiv Sena leader Sachin Sawant in Kandivli on Sunday night.
The sketches are based on the description by three eyewitnesses. However, the police are yet to find a breakthrough.
Sawant was shot dead at point-blank range by one of the two men in Kandivli (East), when he was returning home with one friend. A police official said that it appeared to be a contract killing after differences cropped up over a slum rehabilitation project in the locality. According to an eyewitness, the accused were young.
“We are probing if gang members of Debu Singh are behind the murder,” said the officer. “Singh is wanted for the first attempt on Sawant’s life in 2010, and we are not ruling out the possibility of the same gang being involved this time around as well,” said the officer.
A special team of officers from Mumbai police are working on the case. As per investigation, the shooters were hired from outside the state, said a crime branch official.
A special team of officers from police stations across western and northern region of Mumbai is working on the case. All five units of Mumbai crime branch of are also carrying out a parallel probe. The police have fanned their informers to get clues about the two men, who were hired from outside the state, said another crime branch official, who did not wish to be named.
