Two men pose as cops, con first-time visitor to Mumbai of gold ornaments worth ₹3.7 lakh

The duo checked the victim’s bag under the pretext of a bomb scare and robbed him; police prepare sketches, hunt for accused

Shankar Kumbhar, 42, who has come to Mumbai from Karnataka for the first time, was robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs 3.7 lakh by two unidentified men who introduced themselves to him as police officers on Saturday.

The Sion police, who are investigating the case, said Kumbhar was standing at the bus stop opposite Highway Apartments in Sion waiting to go to Dadar when two men approached him. They introduced themselves as police officers dressed in plainclothes from Sion police station and started a conversation with him.

The duo told him that they were monitoring security in the vicinity as there was a bomb scare, and had been ordered to do random checks of people’s belongings as part of the security drill. Then, one of the two men began examining Kumbhar’s bag, while the other kept him distracted with details of the bomb scare.

The men then returned the bag to Kumbhar and left. Soon after, he checked his bag and found that the gold ornaments he was carrying were missing.

Kumbhar went to Sion police station and filed a complaint. “We have registered a case of impersonation, cheating and theft against two unidentified men, and are trying to track them down with the help of the sketch we’ve made based on Kumbhar’s description of the duo,” said an officer from Sion police station, requesting anonymity.
