Una victims’ family says hospital wants injured youth out

AHMEDABAD: Amid reports that BSP supremo Mayawati — who had raised the Una Dalit flogging issue in Parliament — may visit the victims at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on August 4, the family on Monday alleged the authorities were trying to discharge the four youths even as they were yet to recover.
Keval Rathod, a family member of the victims, said, “Today (Monday) morning we were asked to leave the hospital, though all the four injured are still very weak and in extreme pain.”
The victims, Ramesh Sarviya and three other youths from his family, had also been forcibly discharged from Rajkot Civil Hospital last week.
However, denying the family’s claim, a top official from the hospital said, “Their medical check-up was done this morning. They are undergoing psychiatric treatment. No one has forced them to go.”
Rathod said that their discharge was put off after their families protested the move.
In a letter (a copy which is available with HT) to medical superintendent Dr MM Prabhakar, the family said that one Dr Thakkar asked them to leave the hospital on Monday though the patients required treatment for another 3-4 months.
THANGADH VICTIMS’ FAMILIES ON STRIKE
Demanding a CBI inquiry into the killing of three Dalit youths in 2012 police firing at Thangadh town of Surendranagar district, the families of the victims went on an indefinite strike in Gandhinagar on Monday.
The state government had ordered a CID inquiry into the incident reported after clashes between the Dalits and upper caste groups in the town famous for its Tarnetar annual cultural fair. Four years after the incident, the government is yet to release the CID probe report.
