Photos: Floods wreak havoc in Assam, 15 dead, over 40 lakh affected

Authorities in Assam declared a red alert Monday as the flood situation in the state turned critical, with villages cut off by surging waters and a major highway submerged. The officials warned that the current death toll of 15 could rise as they scramble to reach the affected communities. 30 of the 33 districts in the state have been submerged. Moreover, at least 17 animals have died due to rain-related incidents since last week in and around the state’s Kaziranga National Park.
