Pune rural police arrest sixteen for gambling over rooster fights

The Pune rural police raided a gambling spot where bidders were gambling on rooster cock fights. They arrested sixteen people and recovered Rs 1.05 lakh from their possession.
According to the police, the raid took place at Nisarga lodge in Bhugaon. Acting on a tip-off, a team of local crime branch (LCB) officials raided the place and arrested six persons from the location at 2 am on Thursday.
The police have invoked relevant sections of the gambling act against the suspects and also booked the lodge manager and owner for illegally stocking Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) at the premises.
Besides, police investigations have revealed that the accused had tied blades to the legs of the cocks and they were made to fight. The bets were laid on the cocks who showed impressive performance and had surety to win. The money placed on the winning cock was contributed by the accused. The police have also invoked stringent sections of the animal rights protection against the suspects. The police team carried out the raids under the guidance of superintendent of police Sandeep Patil. Around eight roosters have been seized during the raid and brought to the LCB office.
Meanwhile, many animal activists who are fighting for the implementation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960, has said that strict action against organisers and participants of cockfights and disciplinary action against erring officials should be taken.
