A 22-year-old man attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance after he was booked by Mumbai Police for allegedly posting lewd pictures of a woman on social networking sites. He was admitted to the civil hospital.
Following information provided by Mumbai Police, guards were deputed outside the hospital ward to keep a watch on the man, who was identified as Nitin Verma of Pakhowal Road.
Verma claimed he was in a relationship with a woman, who worked at a skin clinic in Feroze Gandhi Market, and moved to Mumbai last year. He added that both of them were in a serious relationship and wanted to marry, but the girl’s brother was against the match.
He further said after her brother threatened her, she stopped talking to him. He added that her brother also threatened him to stay away from his sister.
Police said Verma was a school drop-out and worked as an assistant at a doctor’s clinic in Sarabha Nagar.
Verma said, “I was depressed over this incident and consumed phenyl and left home. After reaching Thakkarwal village, I tried slitting my wrist but fainted. I was rescued and my parents were informed.”
“I was so depressed that I posted some obscene pictures on Facebook and Instagram that she sent me once,” he added.
Inspector Sukhdev Singh, Sadar station house officer (SHO), said a woman lodged a case against Verma in Mumbai for posting lewd pictures of her on Facebook and Instagram. He added that police officials were deputed at the civil hospital to keep a check on him. Mumbai Police might come and arrest him.
