The couple who was found stuffed in separated sacks and thrown in a canal near Doraha was bludgeoned to death by a property dealer to grab their `8 lakh, Khanna police said on Tuesday.
The police claim to have solved the double murder with the arrest of two residents of Ludhiana. They have recovered the iron rod used in the murders and also recovered the car that was used to carry the bodies to the canal.
The accused have been identified as Arpinder Singh alias Sonu of Shimlapuri and Sarabjit Singh alias Saba of Arjun Nagar of Radha Swami Road. Arpinder is a property dealer and also runs a nursery of plants at Bulara village.
Police claimed that the accused had confessed to their crime.
Giving details, Harcharan Singh Bhullar, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Khanna, said the police had found bodies of a man and woman from the canal near Doraha on April 12. The police had registered a case of murder and initiated investigation. Later, Harpal Singh of Bathinda identified the bodies as that of his brother, Gurpal Singh, and sister-in-law Gurpreet Kaur.
The SSP said a special investigation team was formed to crack the case. During the probe, it came to light, that Gurpal had purchased a house at Bachittar Nagar in Ludhiana through accused Arpinder around two years ago.
"Thereafter, Gurpal asked Arpinder to help him invest money in real estate, following which Arpinder took `8 lakh from him on the pretext of purchasing him a house, and handed him a fake power of attorney, which Gurpal was not aware of," Bhullar said.
When Gurpal started pursuing Arpinder to transfer the ownership of the property in his name, the latter kept dilly dallying the matter. "When Arpinder failed to keep his part of the deal, Gurpal hurled abuses at him April 7. He asked Arpinder to either transfer the ownership of the property in his name or sell off the house and return his money," the SSP added.
However, Arpinder was in no mood to return the `8 lakh, and hence, hatched a conspiracy to kill Gurpal, with the help of his friend, Sarabjit Singh, he added.
"On April 8, the accused called in Gurpal to his nursery on the pretext of selling off the property. When Gurpal reached there, the accused bludgeoned him to death with an iron rod. Later, aware that Gurpal's wife Gurpreet knew he had been dealing with her husband, the accused called in Gurpreet to the nursery and murdered her too.
The accused then removed their clothes to hide their identities and burnt them in the nursery," the SSP said, adding that Arpinder then stuffed the bodies in sacks and threw them in the canal from Gurthali Canal Bridge.
The accused will be produced before the court on Wednesday.
