In its May judgement, the Supreme Court underscored that sex work, in itself, is not an offence under the law. Through its recent directives, the Court also upholds an adult woman’s right to exit, as much as her right to remain. (HT Archive)

Accept agency, fight coercion

The Supreme Court has ordered magistrates to conduct a threshold inquiry during anti-trafficking raids, asking whether a woman chose sex work before treating her as a victim. The directive restores agency and the right to remain or leave, challenging assumptions of coercion. It builds on the Court’s finding that consensual sex work is not an offence.

AI will replace some medical tasks, but it must make us define clearly the role doctors play. (HT Archive)

AI is neither poison nor panacea for doctors

AI can improve diagnosis, but evidence does not yet justify independent practice: human-AI teams often underperform, and better diagnoses have not consistently improved outcomes. Dipke and his comrades began as a non-partisan, non-electoral entity. If they are now in the Opposition club — though the CJP and the Congress have not yet marched together — the question then is whether it is only a matter of time before they become a party. (PTI)

Is the current lull in Indian politics the calm before a storm?

India’s festive-season political pause may precede renewed fireworks as the CJP, Congress, Modi government and Election Commission regroup amid voter-roll disputes and state elections. The CJP must choose between electoral politics and protest, while Congress keeps its distance and the BJP portrays demonstrators as destabilising. The EC has rolled back disputed measures but faces Supreme Court scrutiny.

The Justice Department asks a judge to block certification of Alaska’s Senate election if Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan’s loss margin is smaller than votes won by a same-named challenger, alleging voter confusion. The rare lawsuit raises concerns about the Trump administration’s acceptance of midterm defeats; Democrats deny the challenger is a ruse, and Alaska may be competitive despite Trump’s 2024 victory.
