A 350-year-old traditional whipping festival took place in the outskirts of Coimbatore on Tuesday at Adaikala Amman temple. Hundreds of devotees whipped their body and took out a 2-kilometre procession on the road. The story of this festival dates back to the time when a box containing some jewels, bow and arrow, an Amman statue covered in a cloth came floating down the Noyyal River and since then this whipping festival is being celebrated by the locals.
