Speaking at the pre-release function of Rarandoi Veduka Chudham which stars Naga Chaitanya and Rakul Preet, Chalapathi Rao said women are fit only to be good partners in bed.

Close on the heels of Bollywood singer Abhijeet, who made objectionable comments against activist Shehla Rashid, veteran Telugu actor Chalapathi Rao has done the same against women, only to be slammed left, right, and centre, after which he tendered an apology.

Rao made the comments when he was asked to respond to a line from the trailer in which Naga Chaitanya says that girls are injurious to peace of mind.

In response, Rao said: “Ammayilu hanikaram kadu kani.. pakkalo ki paniki vastharu (Women are only fit for sleeping with men).”

The comment immediately drew flak. The film’s producer and Chaitanya’s actor-father Nagarjuna Akkineni was quick to distance himself from Rao, saying these were not his views.

Actor Rakul Preet also slammed Rao.

Veteran lyricist Ramajogayya Sastry asked the actor to ‘say sorry to naari (women)’.

On the internet too, people did not spare the actor.

Later, on Tuesday, Chalapathi Rao tendered a hand-written apology, which Sivaji Raja and Naresh, president and general secretary of Movie Artists’ Association (MAA), flashed to all, The Hindu reported.

Raja and Naresh said that they would convene a general body meeting and set up a system to ensure such instances do not recur.

The Saroornagar police of Rachakonda Commissionerate near Hyderabad registered a criminal case against Rao on a complaint from social activist Kalpana Dayala, the daily quoted Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat as saying.

The actor was booked under sections 354A (4) and 509 of IPC, according to the Mid-Day.

Rarandoi Veduka Chudham is scheduled to release this year.
