In Karnataka Assembly Election 2018, there were 2,09,278 registered voters for Athani assembly seat, out of which 1,07,961 were male and 1,01,307 were female voters. 0.4% of voters opted for the None of the Above (NOTA) option.
In the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Election 2018, Athani constituency had 11 candidates for assembly seat contention. Athani was one of 80 seats won by the Indian National Congress. It was a close contest with Indian National Congress's Mahesh Iranagouda Kumathalli winning the election upstaging Bharatiya Janata Party's Laxman Sangappa Savadi by a margin of just 2,331 votes.
The top two candidates split 95.4% of votes between them. Indian National Congress's Mahesh Iranagouda Kumathalli got a total of 82,094 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's Laxman Sangappa Savadi secured 79,763 votes. Janata Dal (Secular)'s candidate Girish Kedareppa Butali secured 3,381 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties got 48.4%, 47.0% and 2.0% respectively.
In Karnataka Assembly election 2013, Bharatiya Janata Party's Laxman Sangappa Savadi defeated Indian National Congress's Mahesh Iranagouda Kumathalli by 23,771 votes.
