It was a close contest with Indian National Congress's M. Krishnappa winning the election upstaging Bharatiya Janata Party's H. Ravindra by a margin of just 2,775 votes.
The top two candidates split 93.2% of votes between them. Indian National Congress's M. Krishnappa got a total of 73,353 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's H. Ravindra secured 70,578 votes. Janata Dal (Secular)'s candidate Paramashiva N.E secured 8,174 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties got 47.5%, 45.7% and 5.3% respectively.
In Karnataka Assembly election 2013, Indian National Congress's M.Krishnappa outperformed Bharatiya Janata Party's V.Somanna by 32,985 votes.
