In 2017, 12 candidates were contesting for Talaja assembly constituency seat. Talaja was one of 77 seats won by the Indian National Congress. It was a close contest with Indian National Congress's Kanubhai Mathurambhai Baraiya winning the election upstaging Bharatiya Janata Party's Chauhan Gautambhai Gopabhai by a margin of just 1,779 votes.
95.0% of the total votes were casted to top two candidates. Indian National Congress's Kanubhai Mathurambhai Baraiya got a total of 66,862 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's Chauhan Gautambhai Gopabhai got 65,083 votes. Vyavastha Parivartan Party's candidate Kishorbhai Rudabhai Vaghela grabbed 1,393 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties secured 48.2%, 46.9% and 1.0% respectively.
In Gujarat Assembly election 2012, Bharatiya Janata Party's Shyal Bhartiben Dhirubhai defeated Indian National Congress's Sarvaiya Sanjaysinh Ajitsinh by 32,844 votes.
