For the last 17 years, KC College had been tough competitors at Kiran, their annual college fest, winning the Best College prize every year. But this year, the organiser-in-chief resolved to change the rules of the game.

For the last 17 years, KC College had been tough competitors at Kiran, their annual college fest, winning the Best College prize every year. But this year, the organiser-in-chief resolved to change the rules of the game.

“This year, we decided to not compete and create a fair playing ground,” says Avinash Dadlani, co-event head, Kiran 2011. It was a challenge, though, to communicate this to enthusiastic students, who had been looking forward to the competitions. “We tried initiating the change by putting posters that read, ‘We’re hosts, only hosts’, all over the college. But it didn’t work. So at one of our meetings, we suggested that instead of competing, teams from our college could put up guest performances. Everyone liked the idea and the fest was successful,” adds Dadlani.

Students from KC went to perform opening acts for the dramatics and dance events as well as the inauguration and closing ceremonies. “It was a move to bring in transparency to the whole fest,” says Dadlani, adding, “This time we had 50 colleges registering for the festival, which is a record number. The band competition also saw participation by 25 bands from across the city.”

The highlight of the festival that concluded recently, was the performance by metal band Bhayanak Maut. HR College went on to lift the Best College trophy followed by St Xaviers.
