For the first time in Central India, a successful heart transplant operation took place in Indore’s Medanta Hospital on Friday.
The heart was transported in 14 minutes through a green corridor set up between Choithram Hospital and Medanta Hospital, a distance of 10 km.
Vice-dean MGM Medical College and Dr Sanjay Dixit said the heart left the Choithram Hospital at 1.42 pm and in reached Medanta hospital within 14 minutes and it was transplanted successfully on Sanjay Agrawal (47) from Mhow.
“Heart transplant has not been done in UP of Chhattisgarh or even in PGI Chandigarh so far and Indore has become the first in Central India to do so,” Dr Dixit said.
The kidneys could not be used as they were unfit but the liver and skin were used in Choithram Hospital itself and the cornea was sent to M K International Hospital. The liver was transplated on Dharmendra Jaiswal (47) of Ujjain.
The organs belonged to Veena Paryani, wife of Jagdish Paryani, of Dwarkapuri Colony. She had died of brain hemorrhage at Choithram Hospital.
Divisional commissioner Sanjay Dubey said their aim is to make Indore a major centre for organ transplants and also to ensure that organs get to be used to Madhya Pradesh itself. “Indore is among the few cities in the country where there is both liver and heart transplant facilities. And in the next five to six months we are planning to start bone marrow auto logus transplant in MY Hospital which will take care of our cancer patients,” Dubey said.
