Seven-odd years after Aamir Khan’s Rang De Basanti (RDB; 2006) released in theatres, a documentary about the film’s impact on the country will now be available to the audience.
Called Ru-Ba-Ru, the 85-minute documentary has been helmed by PS Bharathi, the editor of the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film. “The documentary will be available on the Blu-Ray versions of the film,” says an official from Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Pictures Private Limited.
The film revolves around a group of carefree friends, who turn rebellious and take on the government with a drastic measure to make a point against corruption in India. The documentary takes the theme of the film forward and captures real-life incidents, which also highlight the concerns touched upon in the movie — be it the candle-light protest to get Jessica Lal’s murderer convicted or the protests led by Anna Hazare.
“The documentary has just been completed. We have been working on it for six years,” says Rakeysh, who personally participated in the protests against the recommendation and implementation of the Mandal Commission by former Prime Minister VP Singh, back in 1989. He reveals that those memories played a crucial role while he was making RDB.
“I had gone to Delhi in the late ’80s to meet the medical students, who were protesting against the Mandal Commission. They were brutally beaten by the police and rubber bullets were fired at them. Some were even shot with real bullets. I even saw some of the undisclosed footage of how injured students were dragged and dumped in a news channel office in Delhi,” says the filmmaker.

{{/usCountry}}Apart from Rakeysh and Aamir, the documentary also features lyricist Prasoon Joshi and others talking about the impact the film had on the youth.
The blu-ray versions of RDB (and the documentary with it) are scheduled to hit the market around early next month.
