Feels great to be compared to Shakira: Neha Kakkar

Singer Neha Kakkar gets candid about the recent lyrics controversy, and her Bollywood journey so far.

Singer Neha Kakkar, who got popular as the Indian Shakira through her reality show, Indian Idol, in 2006, has come a long way. She has voiced some of the most popular songs, which include title track of Blue (2009), Second Hand Jawani (Cocktail, 2012), Jadoo Ki Jhappi (Ramaya Vastavaiya, 2013) and Dhating Naach (Phata Poster Nikla Hero, 2013).

“It feels great to be compared to Colombian singer, Shakira. After Second Hand Jawani, like we say, Gaadi Chal Padi Aur High Speed Main Chali Jaa Rahi Hai, I don’t want to stop at all,” says Neha, a Delhiite, who started her career by singing in religious gatherings.

Ask if she considers her elder sister Sonu, also a singer, to be her competitor, and Neha says, “There is no competition at all, as Sonu didi and I sound completely different.” On authorities objecting to the lyrics of some recent Bollywood songs, she says, “We do discuss with our lyricists when we are recording. But we cannot stop making or singing such songs just because certain sections of the society don’t like it. I see no point in creating a ruckus about it,” she says.
