Anurag Kashyap had been planning a film on Bihar, but that didn’t materalise. Then, in 2008, he met Zeishan Quadri who narrated the story of Wasseypur that traced the emergence of a coal mafia in the region. Fascinated, Anurag shot it as a 5-hour-20-minute film.

It was screened as a single film at the 2012 Cannes Director’s Fortnight. But unsure of the audience reaction back home to such a long film, he decided to release it in two parts in India.

Part 1 that starts in the early 1940s and ends in the late 1990s, opened on June 22, with a running time of 2 hours and 40 minutes. Part 2, of roughly the same duration, takes the story forward to 2009, and is scheduled for an August 8 release. However, some theatres are willing to screen GOW 1 and 2 back-to-back in a unique marathon. Anurag confirms this saying, “Yes, the full film will be screened at PVR in Juhu and Lower Parel, and many other city theatres.”
