Saif Ali Khan starrer Go Goa Gone (GGG), a film about zombies, opened with average collections last week. It has just done enough business for producers Dinesh Vijan, Saif Ali Khan and Sunil Lulla to recover their money.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “It collected Rs 12.80 cr nett in its opening weekend. This is below the mark as more was expected from the film. The movie is good, but that hasn’t translated into numbers at the box office.”
Trade analyst Amod Mehra adds, “GGG has done average, reasonable business. They (producers) may recover their money, but Saif will not benefit commercially from the film. He hasn’t taken any remuneration anyway. On the other hand, Aashiqui 2, which released two weeks ago is still doing average business. It crossed R60cr this week, which is very good for the budget it was made in.”
Exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi says, “GGG is an engaging film, but it clearly caters to a niche audience, the youth in the metros and at best, some cosmopolitan cultured big cities. Considering its small target base, the ‘A’ certification from the Censor Board and the modest count of screens that it has been released in, it’s doing fairly well.”
However, directors Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru are thrilled with the response the film has received. Krishna says, “People have told me that the film is in a new genre and has been appreciated even though it is A rated. We attempted a new subject which is primarily aimed at the metros, and made it for a budget of roughly R16 cr.”
