Bollywood seems to be adopting a popular Hollywood practice — that of actors getting involved in a film right from the pre-production stages. The new generation of actors such as Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Kangana Ranaut, among several others, are now going for a recce of the locations of shoot, along with the crew to get a real sense of the environment so that they can imbibe it in the character they are expected to play.
Recently, actor Shraddha Kapoor who will play a singer in Rock On 2, visited Shillong in Meghalaya, along with the production team of the film as they went location hunting. When asked why she decided to take time off to go for the recce, she says, “I wanted to absorb the nuances of the place since my character is from there. Shillong is beautiful and I carried the script along so that I could prepare for my role in the real environment.”
Varun Dhawan was also part of the pre-production of his film Badlapur. He was quoted saying, “I spent six to seven months with Sriram (Raghavan, director), before we started shooting the film. I sat through discussions, saw him write the script and also went for the first recce with him.”
Tanu Weds Manu Returns actor Kangana Ranaut also accompanied director Aanand L Rai to the Delhi University campus since she was to play a student from DU in the film. “Kangana did a recce of the campus for our film in her on-screen avatar, and no one recognised her. She sat in the canteen of a DU college and ate samosas and observed the goings-on. Actors coming along for recces is a good practice that helps to bring the character in shape,” says Rai. Filmmaker Shabir Khan adds, “This is a welcome trend. Actors need to understand the terrain the character comes from, and it helps the film.”
