The makers of upcoming multilingual biopic Thalaivi—based on the life of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa—have announced that they have roped in actor Kangana Ranaut has been roped in to play the lead. The announcement was made on the occasion of Kangana’s 32nd birthday on Saturday.
Last seen playing Rani Lakshmi Bai in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Kangana will begin shooting for Thalaivi from April. The project was announced on February 25, the 71st birth anniversary of Jayalalithaa. The film’s title and first look poster were also revealed.
The film will be directed by Vijay and will be shot and release in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The project is being bankrolled by Vishnu Induri.
Talking to Times of India, Vijay recently said: “Actually, producer Vishnu Induri approached me last year with this story idea and asked me if I could direct the film. While I was excited with the idea, I was also reluctant because there’s a huge responsibility of making an honest biopic. She is an achiever who we’ve all grown up watching. But Vishnu was confident about this project. We spent the last eight months researching on her life.”
Vijayendra Prasad, the writer of Baahubali franchise and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, will oversee the writing process. “It’s a blessing to have Vijayendra Prasad sir with us; we worked on more than 20 drafts, and finalised this one last month. The film will focus on the journey of a woman who has been successful in a male-dominated world. The most beautiful thing about her is that she has a powerful mind and is very strong willed; she is an inspiration for many. There will be honesty in the biopic, not drama,” Vijay said.

{{/usCountry}}The final draft of the script has been locked and the team is busy finalising the cast and technicians. While GV Prakash has been roped in to compose music, Nirav Shah will crank the camera.
Other than the biopic, Kangana will also be seen in Ashwini Iyer Tiwari’s sports film Panga. She will play a kabaddi player in the film.
