Katrina Kaif’s journey in the Hindi film industry is worth taking note of. When she first arrived in Mumbai in the early 2000s, she didn’t know a word of Hindi. Her first Bollywood film, Boom (2003), didn’t work at the box office. However, today, she is one of the biggest stars in the industry. “It (her personal journey) has been amazing. Whenever I think about it, or whenever I am going through a hard time or feeling low, my journey is the one thing I look back at with a lot of gratitude,” says Katrina. “All the work and effort I have put into my career has been rewarded. And every woman wants that; it doesn’t matter what profession you are in. You want to be acknowledged and admired,” she adds.
Like many of her contemporaries, including Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma, even Katrina wanted to produce a film. Unfortunately, things haven’t work out so far. “Producing a film was not my dream. It was just an idea, which I’m not pursuing right now, simply because I don’t have the time for it. Having said that, I believe you should never give up on your dreams,” she says.
In a career spanning 13 years, Katrina has delivered several hit films, like Bang Bang (2014), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) and Ek Tha Tiger (2012). But she refuses to take her success for granted. “Everyone should be proud of what they are doing. If you associate yourself with a line of work with genuine passion, and if you don’t take things for granted or become complacent, you do leave a legacy behind. But whether you’ll be remembered only depends on your destiny,” she says.
When she’s not busy working, Katrina spends a lot of time doing charity work with her mother, Suzanne Turquotte, who runs an NGO. Currently, she is helping her mother set up a school for orphan children. “My mother is personally working on the curriculum. Teaching is her passion. I overheard her talking to someone on the phone a few days back; she was saying that in the current education model, kids are finding it very difficult to pay attention [to their studies]. So, she is trying to make learning fun for them. My contribution, however, is limited to the financial aspect,” says Katrina.

The actor recently attended an awards ceremony that recognises women who have done exemplary social work. Katrina says, “Women of worth should be recognised for the work they do. The magnitude of the problems that we face in India -- poverty, lack of education and sanitation, for example -- is probably the highest in the world.”
