There are people who eagerly look forward to celebrating their birthday. And then there are those who treat it like just another day. Rajkummar Rao belongs to the second set. The actor, who turns 31 today, says he does not enjoy too much attention on his birthdays, and prefers spending time only with his loved ones.
“I’m not really a birthday kind of a guy. They don’t excite me much,” he says, adding, “However, this year, I am really excited and a little nervous as well because my film Stree is releasing on the same day. In a way this is my first commercial solo lead, so I am looking forward to the reactions. The film is close to my heart and the fact that it’s releasing on my birthday makes the experience special.”
Though Rajkummar does not plan much during his birthdays, he shares that the crew of the upcoming horror comedy, also starring Shradhha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi and Aparshakti Khurrana, had made certain plans to celebrate.
“I usually stay at home on my birthday, spending time with my family. There’s some cake cutting and then we go out for dinner. But this time, the team of Stree is planning a party to celebrate both the release and my special day,” adds the actor, who has a bunch of films coming up this year and the next including Love Sonia, 5 Weddings, Mental Hai Kya, Made In China, Imli and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga.

{{/usCountry}}Asked about any special birthday memory that he remembers, the actor says there are many. “As a kid, my birthday used to be celebrated in a big way, not lavish, of course. I have grown up in a joint family in Gurgaon, and I have two siblings and two cousins, but my birthdays were always celebrated, maybe because I am the youngest of all. I remember how friends and family used to come over and we’d have so much fun. Once I got this bicycle as a gift and I was so happy. It felt like I got the best gift and would be roaming around on it, though it’s not with me anymore.”

Whether his siblings, Amit and Monika, who are working, married and settled in Gurgaon, plan to come down to Mumbai to be with him on his birthday, Rajkummar says, “No they won’t be able to… You know birthdays make me awkward. It bring along a lot of attention and that’s exactly what I want to avoid,” he signs off.
