Instagram and Twitter are full of it. YouTube will teach you how to tie it. Celebrities too have joined the bandwagon. Here's a trend you might want to follow - or maybe not!

A (questionably) attractive hairstyle where the hair is pulled back and tied into a knot at the back of the head. Only, this trend is in ascendance amongst men! Men are growing out luscious locks and borrowing their girlfriends’ hair ties to rock this style. The origin

It can be traced back to the Japanese samurai chonmage, and a variation of it is worn by sumo wrestlers. Footballer David Beckham was amongst the first to tie his blonde locks into a utilitarian man-bun or mun, as he sped to kick a ball in the pitch. Very soon, actors, musicians and sportsmen jumped aboard.

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal wore a mid-low range bun at a basketball game in May 2014. One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles often ties his shaggy locks into a messy bun. Actor Jared Leto rocked a half-open bun at the 2015 Golden Globes (we like his neatly parted mun too).

Men around the world are sharing pictures of their buns on Twitter. Tons of YouTube videos explain how to execute the look. Instagram accounts worship it [look up #manbunmondays, because "A man bun isn’t a hairstyle, it’s a lifestyle"].

But it’s nothing like the Sikh top knot [too high] or the lazy ponytail [famous amongst musicians] – the mun is halfway between the two.

"The best thing is it is a great low-maintenance hairstyle," says our multimedia designer, Manas Gurung, 25. "It goes with formals or casuals, and one can wear it in many ways (see box)." Manas often sports a medium-high mun with a stubble.
