GMR Infrastructure Ltd, which operates two of India’s busiest airports in Delhi and Hyderabad, is likely to bid for the development of Heraklion International Airport in Greece.
Sources said the Delhi-headquartered infrastructure major had sought and received an “experience certificate” from the aviation ministry to participate for the “international competitive bidding process” to develop Greece’s second busiest airport situated in Crete.
GMR already operates the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Philippines, apart from being the developer and operator of Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.
GMR did not offer comments for the story. “We would not like to comment on the issue,” said a spokesperson of the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the GMR-led consortium that operates IGI airport.
The Philippines government had initiated an international competitive bidding process in December 2012 for the management and development of MCIA. In December 2013 GMR Infrastructure in partnership with Megawide Construction Corporation of Philippines emerged as the highest bidder after offering a bid premium of 14.4 billion Philippine Pesos (approximately US$ 320 million). As per the concession agreement, GMR Megawide Consortium will operate the airport for a period of 25 years commencing November 2014.
The Group also operated airports in Turkey and Maldives. It exited Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen International Airport by selling its stake in 2014 while the Maldives government had terminated the agreement for the Male airport in 2012; a matter that ended in arbitration.
