India’s air traffic rose 17.7% in January-April as nimble-footed private carriers such as Indigo and SpiceJet gained market share while state-owned Air India continued to slip.

Indian carriers flew 364.13 lakh passengers during the first four months of 2017, as against 309.35 lakh a year ago, the ministry of civil aviation said in a release.

In April, the airlines carried 91.34 lakh passengers, shade higher than 90.46 lakh in March but 15.2% higher than a year ago.

The market share of Air India slipped to 12.9% in April from an average 13.6% during January-March. Private players on the other hand grabbed 87.1% in April compared with an average 86.4% in the first three months of 2017.

Indigo increased its dominance in the Indian sky by hiking its market share to 41.4% in April from 39.9% in March, while Jet Airways cornered 15.2%.

SpiceJet caught up with Air India by increasing its market share to 12.9%, while Go Air had 8.1%.

New entrants Air Asia had 3.3% and Vistara 3.2% in the fiercely competitive Indian airline sector.
