The latest server market figures from research firm Gartner Inc placed International Business Machines in the top spot for worldwide revenue, and Hewlett-Packard Co leading the way in overall shipments.
During the second quarter of the year, Armonk, New York-based IBM sold $3.7 billion (€3 billion) worth of servers, to account for 30.4 per cent of the total worldwide revenue of $12.1 billion (€9.9 billion), Gartner said. IBM's sales rose by 4.6 per cent over a year ago.
Palo Alto, California-based H-P was on IBM's tail, with $3.5 billion (€2.9 billion) in sales, followed by Santa Clara, California-based Sun Microsystems Inc. and Round Rock, Texas-based Dell Inc. Both H-P's and Dell's revenue rose from the year-ago period, while Sun slipped by 4.5 per cent.
In terms of shipments, H-P had the top spot with 494,000 units, a 6.6 per cent increase over a year ago. H-P also claimed 27.7 of the total market of 1.78 million shipments.
Dell took the No. 2 spot by shipping 423,000 servers, up 25 per cent from last year. IBM was third with 277,200 units, while Sun came in fourth by shipping nearly 95,000 servers. Among specific server types, Sun led the market for RISC/Itanium Unix servers, with 74,400 shipments, while H-P took the top spot among x86 servers by selling 474,000 devices.
