Microsoft and Nokia are giving people a glimpse at the future, as they see it -- with avant-garde concepts and cool technology that knows no boundaries.

Nokia is showing off a flexible display prototype at its Nokia World event in London. Instead of using multitouch displays or buttons to control what’s on the screen,

the "Nokia kinetic device" is controlled by flexes, twists and bends.

Microsoft is getting ready for the future too. The company has revealed its vision of tomorrow in a video where technology becomes an "active assistant" that can be

used regardless of device or location.

"We create these videos to help tell the story we see unfolding in technology, and how it will impact our lives in the future. The video shows our vision for a future

where technology extends and highlights our productive capabilities; it helps us manage our time better, focus our attention on the most important things, and foster

meaningful connections with the people we care about," said Kurt DelBene, president, Microsoft Office Division in a post on Microsoft’s blog.

While the concepts might seem like they are out of a sci-fi movie, Microsoft insists that the ideas are founded on real technology -- much of which already exists

today in some form or another.

Both Microsoft and Nokia's visions are consistent with current technology trends -- we are shifting from computer and device-based technology to a world of ubiquitous

computing where all types of gestures and inputs can be interpreted by the objects around us.
