The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed that the state government did not consult it before accepting the transfer of jailed ex-terrorists to prisons of the state.
Talking to mediapersons on Thursday, state BJP president Kamal Sharma said the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) should have taken its coalition partner (BJP) into confidence before taking this decision.
Sharma said the Akalis had changed their stand as earlier they were against shifting of convicted and sentenced terrorists from other states to Punjab. "At this stage, I can't say whether it is going to be a law and order issue, but the state government may have to give parole to these former terrorists when they are lodged in state jails," he added. He asserted that the BJP had a clear stand against terrorism and terrorists.
Besides Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar, who is being transferred to the Amritsar jail from New Delhi's Tihar jail, there are eight convicts who are being brought to Punjab's prisons.
Bhullar is being shifted on the plea of his wife Navneet Kaur Bhullar, who citing his deteriorating health for demanding his transfer to a state jail. The state government has given its 'no objection' to the Delhi government for transfer of Bhullar to Punjab.
