A fight between a Mataur resident and his wife over Rs 100 allegedly forced the latter to first strangulate her two minor children and later commit suicide on Wednesday.

The three bodies were found at Mataur village in SAS Nagar on Wednesday, after which the man claimed that his wife had committed suicide after murdering their children. They had a fight over the money on Tuesday night, he said.

The deceased were identified as Bindu, aged about 20, and her son Rachit (5) and daughter Radhika (6). Police claimed that the two children were first strangulated with a sash while the woman allegedly killed herself by hanging herself with the help of a string used to hang curtains.

Her husband Uttam Kumar (25) said he saw his wife and children dead in their house in the morning. Uttam, a migrant labourer hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was staying in the village with his family for the last about two years.

“On Tuesday night, I had asked her to give me Rs 100, which I had handed over to her in the morning but she refused. Irked over her refusal, I slapped her. When she said that she will never see my face again, I could never imagine she would kill herself,” said Uttam Kumar, who was detained for questioning by the police after the incident but later let off.

While Radhika was a Class 1 student, Rachit was studying in kindergarten at Hemkunt school situated near their village house. Bindu did not send the children to school on Wednesday. Police have initiated investigations into the cause of deaths.
