3-year-old girl dies after police van runs over her in Pune’s Uttamnagar

The girl, identified as Divya Chavan, is a resident of Uttamnagar, where the driver of the police van also lives

A three-and-half-year-old girl was killed after a police van ran over her on Wednesday evening.

“At 5:30pm-5:45pm, the hawaldar had gone home for tea in Uttamnagar. The girl was playing near the police van and he did not notice her presence when he came out and started the van. As he moved the vehicle, the girl screamed and that’s how he realised that she was present under the van,” said police inspector (crime) Satish Dahale of Uttamnagar police station.

The girl, identified as Divya Chavan, is a resident of Uttamnagar, where the driver of the police van also lives. The driver was identified as Hawaldar Tandale, according to PI Dahale.

The inspector also said that Tandale immediately rushed the child to Mai Mangeshkar Hospital. However, she was declared dead on arrival. She was then taken to the Sassoon General Hospital for post-mortem.

A case under Section 304(a) (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code will be registered against Tandale at the Uttamnagar police station.
