Twelve mobile phones, eight data cables and four sachets of tobacco were recovered from a suspicious packet found near the compound wall of Ludhiana Central Jail. The Division Number 7 police have booked two inmates in connection with the incident.

The FIR was registered on the complaint of assistant jail superintendent Jaswinder Singh, who said jail staff found the packet near the compound wall on October 1. On opening it, they found the mobile phones, data cables and tobacco sachets.
The jail authorities suspect the inmates had arranged for the contraband to be brought into the premises through their aides outside the jail. The packet was allegedly thrown over the compound wall from outside.
The accused have been identified as Joyan Masih of Batala in Gurdaspur and Sahil Malik of Mohalla New Janta Nagar in Ludhiana. A subsequent inquiry by the jail authorities led to their alleged involvement in the smuggling of the items.
ASI Gurdial Singh, who is investigating the case, said an FIR had been registered under Sections 42(2) and 48(2) of the Punjab Prisons and Correctional Services Act.
