A portion of Suman Hospital Road near Sharma Halwai Chowk in Model Town caved in on Saturday after a leaking private water connection caused erosion of the soil beneath the road, municipal corporation officials said. The leakage was fixed soon by the civic body.

The affected stretch is in front of Timmy Baker, opposite City Plaza, near Yes Bank. The cave-in occurred a day after the city received light showers.
Activist Arvind Sharma said the same spot had developed a smaller cave-in around 1.5 years ago and the municipal corporation had then filled the affected portion with soil, he said.
Sharma said the latest cave-in was considerably larger and required a proper assessment of the road and the infrastructure beneath it. “Filling the affected portion again will not address the underlying problem. There could possibly be leakage, sewerage damage, water seepage, or some other underground problem beneath the road. If the municipal corporation simply fills the cavity without identifying and rectifying the underlying cause, the road could sink again, and the cave-in could become even larger and more dangerous in the future,” he said.
Civic body commissioner, Ojasvi Alankar, said, “Upon inspecting the spot, it was found that a private water connection was leaking which caused the soil erosion and led to the cave-in. The same has been fixed now.”
