The National Students Union of India (NSUI) announced their panel for the upcoming Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC ) elections on Friday. Stir followed after they announced two candidates for the posts of president and vice president in the evening.
A press conference was called by NSUI earlier, but it had to be deferred, as the Delhi leadership of NSUI had only approved the name of Gurman Singh Sidhu of the department of pharmacy for the post of president, told a NSUI insider. A second letter by national president of NSUI Vinod Jakhar also confirmed the name of Aakansha Thakur of the department of biophysics for the post of vice president.
NSUI party panel announcements have been mired by controversy every year. Last year, the announcement of Prabh Singh Gill as the president face led to a division in the party, which further made Sumit Sharma to contest the election under the student front banner.
With Sharma having rejoined the party, NSUI appears to be united on the surface, however internal factionalism is still rife with some factions supporting Aakansha’s bid as president initially. This year, faces from the Punjab Congress, who are usually involved in PU elections, don’t have as much influence as they are more focused on the party’s state assembly election preparations.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) remains the only major party now that hasn’t announced their presidential candidate yet. A senior ABVP member confirmed that the party is going ahead with campaigning for Ankit Bidhan, a research scholar. Posters of Bidhan have already been prepared, while ABVP is planning to formally announce him as the candidate on Monday.

{{/usCountry}}Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP) announced their presidential pick -- Aadil Brar of University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) on Thursday. Brar was seen campaigning in the campus on Friday. Darshpreet Singh of Sath, who was the first major candidate announced, for the president post is also actively campaigning on campus while parties including Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) and left parties like PSU Lalkaar are also expected to finalise candidates for the president’s post.
Nominations for the PUCSC elections will start on Monday, while the final list will be released on Tuesday. The PUCSC polls are scheduled on August 31.
