The Punjab and Haryana high court has sought a response from the Chandigarh administration on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking setting up of a family court at the district courts, Chandigarh.
“By the next date fixed, we expect the respondents to ensure that adequate steps are taken for establishment of family court at Chandigarh, at the earliest possible,” the bench of acting chief justice, Ashwani Kumar Mishra and justice Rohit Kapoor observed while fixing the matter for further hearing on September 2.
The PIL, filed by an NGO, People Welfare Society, said that the High Court had already approved the proposal of establishment of the family courts in the year 2017 and it is still awaiting notification by the administration.
According to a communication from high court to UT administration in April 2025. The administration was told to issue necessary notification sanctioning two posts of additional district and sessions judges and requisite staff for the two- family courts.
