The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur in West Bengal submitted a three-page report to the Calcutta high court on Tuesday in connection with the alleged ragging incidents in the hostel.
“The IIT Kharagpur authorities submitted a report to the Calcutta high court on Tuesday. The court has ordered not to disclose the contents of the report as it may affect the ongoing investigation,” said Ranajeet Chatterjee, high court advocate, representing the victim’s parents.
The body of a 23-year-old student of IIT Kharagpur was recovered from his hostel room on October 14. The parents of the victim had moved the court questioning the role of the IIT authorities. As the student hailed from Assam, the north eastern state’s chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 20 had asked his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee to have a thorough investigation conducted into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Earlier this month, the single bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha ordered the director of IIT Kharagpur to file a report on the steps the institute had taken to stop “ragging” after complaints had poured from a team of wardens from a students’ hostel.

“The director of IIT Kharagpur shall file a report before this court on the adjourned date in this regard.
The students involved in the ‘ragging’ shall be named by the director in his report,” the order had stated.
The West Midnapore police, investigating the case, also submitted a report to the court.
The court will hear the matter again on November 30.
