Doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) successfully treated an eight-year-old girl with a rare congenital condition in which she had a near-complete duplication of the colon.
Divya, 8, from Ambedkar Nagar, had been passing stool through an extra opening below the vaginal opening since birth, while also passing stool normally. After unsuccessful treatment elsewhere, she was referred to KGMU, a release shared with the media on Friday read.
Prof Anand Pandey from the department of paediatric surgery diagnosed colonic duplication, which was confirmed through a CT scan. The girl underwent a three-hour surgery under the supervision of Prof Jiledar Rawat, Prof Pandey, Dr Rahul Rai, Dr Kriti and Dr Sobha, while the anaesthesia team was led by Prof Satish Verma, it read.
Doctors separated the duplicated colon from the normal colon and joined the two to create a common channel.
The girl is now healthy and no longer passes stool through the abnormal opening. The treatment expenses were supported through the CM/PM fund. KGMU vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand congratulated the team on the successful surgery.
