A 40-year-old man was arrested outside a bank in Govandi on Saturday for allegedly duping senior citizens at the pretext of helping them count notes.

The accused, Amjad Irani, 40, a resident of Karjat has many such cases registered against him in Andheri, Vakola, Dindoshi and Ghatkopar police stations. “A police patrolling team found a man suspiciously loitering near a bank premises at Devargaon area in Govandi. The man, who was later identified as Irani, was checked and found in possession of drill machine, hex blade, pliers and other instruments used for house break-ins,” said Shahji Umap, deputy commissioner of police, zone 6.
Investigations revealed that Irani had once tried to rob the same bank, outside which he was found. “Irani had made an unsuccessful attempt to conduct theft by breaking the bank’s wall,” said Umap. Police are investigating if there are more persons involved with Irani in similar crimes.
