GORAKHPUR The Gorakhpur Development Authority (GDA) has cleared chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s ambitious project of building an international-level convention centre in the district. The development came after the 20-acre land allotted for Champa Devi Park was cancelled, said GDA vice-chairman Mahendra Singh Tanwar.
According to officials, the allottees -- including one Rohit Agarwal and others -- violated the condition of allotment by converting public park into a marriage hall. They were even taking commercial benefits from the public park, officials added. Notably, a water park and a marriage hall are being run in the allotted portion of the park.
Now, GDA has given one week to allottees to remove their equipment and other things from the park. Sources said that after the land is vacated, GDA would have 25-acre land where world-class convention centre with capacity of 5,000 seats would be constructed.
The GDA, as per sources, had sealed the park in 2019 but later, the allottees sought permission for three more days. Despite the expiry of that period, allottees continued the commercial use of the land, which is located in front of the world-famous Ramgarh Lake.
