The city is currently witnessing fluctuating night temperatures with the last four nights logging a temperature variation of one to two degrees Celsius. This in turn is leading to uncomfortable weather ranging from chilly early mornings to scorching heat during the rest of the day.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), “There is significant variation in night temperatures. On April 25, a night temperature of 17.4 degrees Celsius was recorded, which was 2.7 degrees Celsius below the usual temperature. Whereas on April 26, a night temperature of 22.2 degrees Celsius was recorded, which was one degree Celsius above the usual temperature. On April 27, the night temperature again fell to the usual 21.1 degrees Celsius.”

Vineet Kumar, former researcher, IITM Pune, said, “The variation in minimum temperature is associated with the wind direction and the amount of moisture in the atmosphere. When the winds over Pune are from the west and northwest direction, there is a drop in temperature. Whereas when the winds over Pune are from the east and southeast direction, there is a rise in minimum temperatures as these winds are warmer and carry greater moisture.” The increase in minimum temperatures in the city since the last three days is associated with an increase in moisture as higher moisture traps the outgoing longwave radiation during the night, leading to lesser cooling as compared to the absence of moisture, Kumar said.
