The Centre and the Maharashtra government have officially renamed the town of Islampur in Sangli district as Ishwarpur. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that the central government has given the nod to change the town’s name.

Former minister Sadabhau Khot welcomed the decision and said, “It was a long standing demand to change Islampur’s name which got approved.”
Food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal had announced in the Legislative Assembly on the concluding day of the monsoon session on July 18, 2025 that the proposal to rename Islampur to Ishwarpur had received cabinet approval and would be forwarded to the Union government for final clearance.
Earlier, the Maharashtra government changed the names of three cities, including Osmanabad (Dharashiv), Ahmednagar (Ahilyanagar) and Aurangabad (Sambhajinagar).
