The Smarth police have booked three persons, including two policemen, for abetment to suicide on Monday, after a loan guarantor ended his life after being harassed by police who extorted money for not arresting him.
The loan guarantor died by suicide on Monday morning at his residence, following which his daughter registered a complaint at Samarth police station.
The accused have been identified as Kiran Bhatlawande resident of Manjari, and two police constables Bhagyawan Dyandev Nikam and Sachin Ramchandra Barkade.
According to police, Bhatlawande had approached the man to be a guarantor on a vehicle loan which he took from a Hyderabad-based finance company. However, from the past few months, Bhatlawande did not pay the pending ₹70,000, after which the finance company issued non bailable warrant. Since the man was the guarantor, the police came to arrest him.
In her complaint, the daughter alleged that police constables from Samarth police station harassed her father and threatened to arrest him as he was the guarantor in the deal. Her father paid ₹8,000 to the constables to avoid his arrest. When her father requested Bhatlawande to complete the payment, he refused. Fed up of the continuous harassment from the police, he took the major step.
Ramesh Sathe senior police inspector from Samarth police station said, “We have recovered a suicide note that mentions Bhatlawande as reason for suicide. As per his daughters complaint, we have registered a case and search for Bhatlawande is underway.”
