A 22-year-old woman was arrested on Monday from the Ranjangaon MIDC area for allegedly murdering her 11-month-old infant and dumping the body in a well, police said on Tuesday

The police probe revealed that the crime took place on March 8. After the decomposed body of the infant was recovered from a well in Bhamabarde village, the case was registered as an accidental death. However, suspicions arose during the investigation, prompting police to probe deeper.
During sustained interrogation, the mother allegedly confessed to the crime. The accused told police that frustrated by the baby’s constant crying, she killed him and later disposed of the body in the well.
Prashant Dhole, deputy superintendent of police (Shirur), said, “The mother was upset by her son’s frequent crying. Additionally, she wanted to marry another guy and her son was a major hurdle. Hence, she eliminated him.”
Police also said this is the accused’s second marriage and she was unhappy with the relationship.
The initial accidental death report (ADR) registered at Ranjangaon MIDC police station was converted into a murder case under sections 103(1) and 238(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is ongoing.
